Beyond the Handoff: Design Systems, Code & AI

Design systems are no longer just libraries of components: they are becoming the connective layer between design, development, and AI.

In this hands-on workshop, we'll explore how to build systems that can scale, communicate, and evolve: from multi-theme architecture and component foundations to Figma Code Connect and AI-assisted workflows for documentation, auditing, and maintenance.

Through practical exercises, demos, and real-world scenarios, participants will learn how to reduce friction between designers and developers, make their systems easier to maintain, and rethink the traditional design-to-development handoff.

The workshop is designed for product designers, design-system designers, developers, design engineers, and product leaders, and will close with an open discussion and Q&A focused on participants' own experiences and challenges.

About Katerina Miliaraki

Katerina Miliaraki is a Design Manager at Kaizen Gaming, where she leads the Gaming & Rewards team and its design system. She previously founded and led Kaizen's centralized, multi-theme, multi-brand design system. Before that, she led design systems at Orfium, following her early work on the Beat design system from 2017. Her work focuses on design leadership and building scalable systems that help teams, products, and brands grow.

Workshop:

From Brief to Storefront: A Portable AI Workflow for Web Designers

Wednesday 9 December

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll take a shared brief for a fictional ceramics shop and use AI to explore typography, colour and layout, create a small design system and apply it across three essential ecommerce pages: Home, Collection and Product.

Everyone starts with the same content and assets, but develops their own visual direction. The focus is on directing the design process: giving AI useful context, comparing alternatives, refining the results and turning approved choices into consistent designs across different page types.

Along the way, we’ll maintain a lightweight set of project files that records the brief, design decisions and the reasoning behind them. Rather than leaving that knowledge scattered across conversations, we’ll create a portable source of context that different AI models and agents can use.

We’ll finish by handing the project to a fresh AI session to test whether it can continue from the files alone. Participants leave with their page prototypes, a documented design system and a repeatable workflow for future client projects.

About Gerasimos Tsiamalos

Gerasimos Tsiamalos is a web designer and co-founder of Truly Fine Pixels, a Greek company that designs and develops Shopify themes for online stores around the world. He has worked on the web since 2001, with many years' experience creating digital products and bringing them to the international market, first through CSSIgniter, which has served 150,000 customers in the WordPress ecosystem.

Since 2022 he has focused on Shopify, where with his team he has created the Athens, Maranello and Tokyo themes, available on the official Shopify Theme Store, serving 5,000 Shopify customers worldwide. His work connects design with the real needs of businesses, from organising complex product catalogues and the shopping experience to the day-to-day running of an online store.

Alongside this, he and his team are building Widgetizer, an open-source tool for creating websites, with small businesses at its centre. He is particularly interested in how artificial intelligence is changing the way we create and manage the web, and in how design can make that transition truly useful for people without technical knowledge.

With Thanos Papavasileiou

Gerasimos leads the workshop with Thanos Papavasileiou. Thanos has spent 20 years designing e-commerce, marketplaces and B2B SaaS, for clients like Christie's, Euronext and Mitsui, and as a design lead at startups like Transifex and Incrediblue. Today he works with founders and tech companies on both sides of the sign-up: the pages that bring visitors in, and the product that keeps them paying.
